Just a few days after celebrating Nollywood stars and filmmakers at a gala event dubbed Lights, Camera, Naija, Netflix is stepping up its game in Nigeria with an exciting slate of new series and movies set to premiere in the last quarter of 2023 and in 2024.
Currently in different stages of production, the upcoming slate includes works from filmmakers Mo Abudu and her production company EbonyLife Studios, Kunle Afolayan, Kemi Adetiba, Editi Effiong and Charles Okpaleke. Check out more details below.
Aníkúlápó
Following the success of his Yoruba epic Aníkúlápó, which made it to the top of Netflix’s most-watched non-English films globally, Kunle Afoloyan returns with a spin-off series of the same name. The four-part sequel which recently wrapped up production is directed and produced by Afolayan, will feature returning cast of Sola Sowobale, Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Owobo Ogunde, Gabriel Afolayan, Lateef Adedimeji, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Uzee Usman, Oyinda Sanni and Taiwo Hassan.
Òlòtūré
Mo Abudu’s Ebony Life human trafficking feature film Òlòtūré will return as a series with the protoganist, the young journalist Òlòtūré, continuing her undercover work as she makes the perilous journey across the Benin border and through the hostile lands of Niger and Libya to the Mediterranean as she desperately tries to find a way out.
Kenneth Gyang returns as director with the cast featuring Sharon Ooja, Omoni Oboli, Beverley Osu, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Stan Nze, Amarachukwu Ono, Bukola Oladipupo, Daniel Etim Effiong and Patrick Doyle.
The Black Book
From Editi Effiong in his feature directorial debut, The Black Book is a crime thriller film led by Richard Mofe-Damijo as a retired military man who seeks justice after a corrupt policeman kills his only son. The Black Book also stars Ade Laoye, Sam Dede, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Olumide Oworu, Shaffy Bello, Ireti Doyle, Taiwo Ajayi Lycett, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Patric Doyle, Bimbo Manuel Femi Branch, Denola Grey, Kelechi Udegbe and Nobert Young.
Blood Vessel
From Charles Okpaleke and Play Network Studios, Blood Vessel is a crime thriller film that follows a group of six friends who find themselves caught in the crossfire and attempt to flee to South America as stowaways on a ship as unrest grows over a mega coup plotting in their hometown along the Niger Delta.
Directed by Moses Inwang, this film is led by David Ezekiel, Adaobi Dibor and Jide Kene Achufusi.
Ijogbon
Another one from Kunle Afolayan, Ijogbon is a coming-of-age adventure film that follows four teenagers from a rural village in South-West Nigeria whose lives change when they stumble across a pouch of diamonds.
WAR: Wrath and Revenge
From Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios, WAR is a spin-off of the popular drama series Sons of Caliphate. It follows Nuhu Bula’s rise to the governorship of Kowa, treacherously orchestrated by his wife Binta, who would stop at nothing to see her husband succeed. When Binta discovers her husband is about to take a second wife, the wrath of a woman scorned will stop at nothing to protect her love.
To Kill A Monkey
To Kill A Monkey is a crime thriller series from King of Boys director Kemi Adetiba. The series which recently kicked off production stars William Benson, Bucci Franklin, Bimbo Akintola, Chidi Mokeme, Dami Adegbite and Ireti Doyle.
